OUR STORY
The Southern Brewing Company first opened its doors on May 14, 2015 by co-owners Brian Roth and Rick Goddard. Roth and Goddard met at the National Beer Wholesalers Convention in 2008, where the two set out on a quest to open a brewery. Seven years and 520 brewery visits later, Southern Brewing Company was established in Athens, Georgia. Our property boasts the first purpose-built brewery in the state nestled within 15-acres of land, just 2.5 miles outside of downtown Athens.
Athens is known for its tightly-knit community, lively music and art scene. We strive to be an integral part of the Athens community as a place where all of these incredible aspects can come together. SBC is committed to celebrating family and community, and we believe beer is a great way to bring people together. We have an enjoyable atmosphere, including a dog friendly yard, corn hole, two stages which host a variety of local and regional acts on any given weekend. We work to support our Athens community by sourcing local ingredients whenever possible. For example, our Wild Azalea yeast strain was captured on our property prior to construction. It is now preserved and recultivated with the help of Dr. Jeff Rapp and the UGA Microbiology Department . We are proud to be one of less than 50 breweries in the country running a similar yeast harvesting program.
Southern Brewing Company has a lot to look forward to in the future. We have plans to build an outdoor amphitheater and finish out a hiking and biking trail. We have some of the best brewers in the country, brewing an extensive and eclectic variety of beers. Come join our family, have a beer, and smile, y’all. We are just getting started!
