HISTORY

Wedge at Wedge Studios

Wedge at Wedge Studios

Located in the heart of Asheville’s River Arts District, Wedge Studios was founded by metal artist John Payne. A pioneer of the River Arts District, Payne converted this 100 year old triangular three story building into a studio for his metal “Kinetosaurs” and leased the remaining studio spaces to fellow artists. Now home to 20+ working artist studios, Payne’s legacy is alive and vibrant. Founded in 2008, The Wedge Brewery anchors the dock level of the building with a 10BBL brewery/tasting room and an expansive outdoor seating area.

Wedge at Foundation

The Wedge at Foundation is located a mile upstream from Wedge Studios. This historic building was constructed by Hans Rees and Sons in 1898 to house what would become the largest leather tannery in the country. Rees invented the process by which cowhides are cured, tanned and finished to turn high-powered engine transmissions. Today the Foundation buildings are very much a part of the River Arts community. Known for the large graffiti murals, the area is a draw for some of the nations top muralists. The Wedge Brewery added its second brewery/tasting room in 2017 to expand with its River Arts neighborhood.
